Building of a dam on Jökulsarlon in June 2010

Jökulsarlon Landowners Association has received numbers of inquiries regarding the building of the dam across the waterfront by the Jökulsarlon bridge as has been viewable on the webcamera available by this link.

The reason for the dam building is to protect the foundation of the Jökulsarlon Glacial River bridge.

This project is carried out by the Icelandic Road Administration and the sole purpose of the dam construction was to provide an workable access for the power shovel digger to place a row of protective stone structure below the water level in order to prevent huge icebergs from hitting and damaging the bridge founding pillars without any obstruction at all.

We think they managed to do a very good job and this will be to protect the bridge and thereby access on national road #1.
