Syllabus

Course Objectives:

The aim of this course is to help students to…
§ increase their vocabulary, both literary and general, by reading and listening to English
§ develop abilities to read various articles and interpret literature critically
§ write clear, effective sentences and well-developed paragraphs
§ develop argumentative writing skills
§ communicate in English with confidence

Course Description:

Students read the short stories "First Confession" and "Girl and Wolf" and the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Grammar will be reviewed in connection to other parts of the course with the aid of Ný ensk málfræði fyrir framhaldsskóla. Students finish units 21-23, 26, 29, 33, 37-39, 46, 47, 100 and 118-124 and use the interactive grammar website http://www.bhs.is/enska to test their knowledge of grammar, word formation and vocabulary. Students will also read texts and do assignments in Kiwi Porridge and on various handouts. Students are required to use English all the time. Late assignments lower the grade.
