Syllabus
Course Objectives:
The aim of this course is to help students to
· improve their fluency in English and develop their abilities
to work independently
· develop abilities to discuss different ideas in various literary
texts, films and video and audio materials
· write systematically about literature and ideas and improve their
argumentative writing skills
· increase their knowledge of syntax and grammar as well as their
skills in using punctuation and dictionaries

Modern Short Stories - Alex Martin and Robert Hill
A5 notebook
A good English dictionary and internet access

Course Description:
Students read the short stories "Outside the Cabinet-Maker's",
"Ace in the Hole" and "The First Seven Years" from
Modern Short Stories and the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding.
Students finish units 22-23, 57-58 and 88-92 in Ný ensk málfræði
fyrir framhaldsskóla and use the interactive grammar website http://www.bhs.is/porridge
to test their knowledge of grammar, word formation and vocabulary. Students
will also work with Melon Porridge and various handouts as well as films,
audio and oral assignments. Students are required to use English all the
time. Students will write one A5 page in a diary after every class. The
diary is handed in at the end of every week.
Late assignments lower the grade.
Evaluation:
Final exam counts 50% (students must pass this part of the evaluation)
Writing assignments 10%
Short story test 10%
Oral assignments 10%
Diary 10%
Homework and quizzes 10%
Students that get the grade 8,5 in this part can skip the final exam.
