Session HARDWARE - Teacher's notes

Approximate time for this session: 3 hours

 

Goals and objective

The objective of this session is to provide the basic concepts and terms of the computer hardware.
By the end of this session students should be able to:

cooperate with other students (see background)
explain term HARDWARE and related terms
explain and distinguish various types of computer, such as personal, mini- and main-frame computers, desktop and portable computers, in terms of capacity, speed, cost and purposes
explain the purpose and/or usage of the main parts of a personal computer: central unit and peripheral equipment
explain the main parts of the central unit: CPU, internal memory and interfaces and adapters, their purpose, capacity measurement (bit, byte, KB, MB, GB), processing speed, MHz, MIPS
explain the purpose of peripheral equipment and the basic types: memory devices, input devices and output devices
use these basic terms and principles in practice

 

Session overview

In this session the students cooperate with tutor/s and each other to get knowledge and practical skills of hardware. At the beginning of the session the tutor provides the basic practical oriented explanation and examples. In next part of the session students explore the related content for other knowledge and practical skills.

The tutors provide the introductory explanation, with practical examples; they consult and advise students, and oversee practical common exercises - discussion, interviews, etc.

 

 

Session procedure

Opening

The teacher creates cooperative atmosphere and explains objective and aims of this session.

Cooperative work (without the running computer)

The teacher explains basic term and concepts of hardware by simple, practical-oriented and examples-based way (WHAT IS, WHY, HOW).
This part is focused on the practical available hardware, examples and explanations.

Individual and cooperative work at the computer

The students open the door "Hardware", repeat the basic terms and principles from the previous part and learn other topics.

The tutors should include practical exercises for discussions, repeating and learning.

Conclusion

The tutor summarises the content and opens the discussion about the results and obtained practical skills and knowledge in hardware.
The session ends with homework suggestions.

 

Homework suggestions

The tutor could ask students for suggestions for homework, and for the practical meaning of the session content for their future.

Students complete evaluation form, go to problem/success & failure corner.
