Earth science news sources and journals.

There are no online earth science news sources or journals yet in Iceland, but there are several professional earth science journals while some newspapers and magazines frequently give well illustrated accounts of natural events.

• Jökull - The journal of the Glaciological Society & Geoscience Society of Iceland Articles are in English, with an Icelandic summary and cover the complete range of earth science topics in Iceland.

• Náttúrufræðingurinn - The journal of the Natural History Society of Iceland. (Náttúrufræðifélag Íslands). Articles are in Icelandic with an English summary. Covers all natural history, predominantly about Iceland. Always carries earth science material.

• Acta Naturalia Islandica
  Útgáfustarfsemi Náttúrufræðistofnunar ( Náttúrufræðistofnun Íslands ) - overview of the publications of the Natural History Museum, with links to fully documented titles. Includes published maps.

Newspapers and magazines


• Morgunblaðið- (In Icelandic) Iceland´s largest daily newspaper. Full online services available by subscription, but news on major earth science events in Iceland are usually posted specially. Older copies available.
  
• Iceland Review- popular general magazine on Iceland in English. Their web site posts daily news items.

• The Geothermal School
  
• Icelandic Geodetic Survey (Landmælingar Íslands) - provides map coverage of the country: topographic, geological, vegetation etc. Also provides good aerial photographic coverage, some very recent.
• Meteorological Office
  - apart from weather observations and forecasting their Geophysics Dept. maintains a seismological network.
  
• Mývatn Research Station
  
• The National Energy Authority- carries out basic earth science research connected with hydro and geothermal power schemes.
  
• Natural History Museum - the state run museum of natural history.
  
• The Nordic Volcanological Institute - run jointly by the Nordic countries, this site provides online information on current Icelandic eruptions, as well as more general geological information related to volcanoes.
  
• Science Institute - University of Iceland. A large part of the research at this institution is concerned with geophysics, seismology and volcanic geology.
  
• The Geoscience Society of Iceland (Jarðfæðafélag Íslands) (in Icelandic at present)- large and active society of professional geoscientists, teachers and students. Extra note: the webmaster is the author of these GEO. web pages.
  
• The Research Council of Iceland - Iceland's main agency for promoting and coordinating science.
