The Western fjörds region is one of the oldest parts of the country, the rocks having drifted to this position relative to the active spreading ridge. Farthest west they reach around 16 million years and sediments contain plant remains such as vine and palmtree, showing that the climate at this time was quite different to that of today at these latitudes.

In the photograph, glaciers have cut deeply into the lava pile in many glacial periods.
