In 1970 an eruption
occurred on the northwest flank of Hekla. Such eruptions have
occurred before. They tap the lower flank parts of the magma chamber
where the composition is basaltic. A considerable volume (0.2 cubic
kilometres) of aa lava crept slowly forward and was easy to access so
that many people turned out to watch.
