Eldfell (at left), did not exist before the eruption in 1973. The lava flowed out of the crater wall to the left of the picture. The much older Helgafell (5.000 y) is at the right of the picture. Its hummocky lava provides an interesting course for golfers. A group of students at bottom left examines the excavated farm which may date from at least two centuries before the generally accepted date of 874 for the Settlement of Iceland.
