The eruption fissure on which Eldfell lies extends towards the southwest and into the sea. Small scoria craters were formed by lava fountains here in 1973, but the activity continued at one place to build up Eldfell, from which the picture is taken. Beyond can be seen the bay of Stakkabót which is the rim of a large explosion crater (5.000 yrs)
