younger formations and recent lava
The new mountain of
Eldfell (1973) to the left and the older (5000 yrs) Helgafell.
Eldfell has been reduced in height due to wind erosion of the loose
ash, with the result that it is now lower than Helgafell. Centre
picture shows an excavated farm on Heimaey where research suggests
that the Settlement of Iceland may be at least two centuries earlier
than supposed
