Some general advice on using search engines.

Use the options offered to make the search as meaningful as possible. They allow you to narrow down the search considerably.
use broad categories first and then more specific.
be prepared for results which are out of context. Change your keywords and try again.

I just don´t know what to look for!

This is quite common - even experienced scientists are familiar with the problem. You need some ideas on suitable words to use in you search, or a good starting point. To get started, try this example of a search strategy.

Orðabanki Íslenskrar málstöðvar (Íslensk málnefnd / Háskóli Íslands) - 18 different word collections which cover most of the sciences. English-Icelandic is covered, as well as many other languages. Try this if you are looking for the official translation.

SEARCH - from here you can search the collections. (don´t forget to look at "leiðbeiningar" when you get there)
Multi-lingual thesaurus for the Geoscience (from GEIXS) - a thesaurus of over 6,000 earth science terms, arranged at various levels of detail. At present there are translations between 12 different languages. (íslenska ekki enn, en sænska kemur aðeins að gagni)
